The Fight for Glory: Joey Logano's Las Vegas Battle and Talladega Focus
In a thrilling display of determination, Joey Logano and his No. 22 Shell | Pennzoil Ford Mustang team fought tooth and nail at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, leaving Sin City with a hard-earned sixth-place finish and their NASCAR Cup Series Playoff dreams still alive.
The South Point 400 marked a pivotal moment for Logano, who has been on a remarkable run with four top-10 finishes in the last six races. Despite starting below the cutline, this three-time champion and his Team Penske crew have shown they're not going down without a fight.
For most of the race, Logano hovered just inside the top 15, a steady but unspectacular performance. But as the final stage approached, the No. 22 team faced a challenge, their Mustang drifting further back due to long-run handling issues.
And then, with just 25 laps to go, fate intervened. A late-race caution gave the team one last chance. Crew chief Paul Wolfe took a bold gamble, opting for a two-tire stop to gain track position while most of the field chose four tires.

"We had nothing to lose," Logano reflected post-race. "Paul made a great call, putting us on the front row. That's all you can ask for. We needed to gain track position and hope the two tires held up."
As the green flag dropped, Logano's push for the lead was thwarted by a split-second decision from Alex Bowman, who chose to help Chase Briscoe instead. "The No. 48 had a choice, and unfortunately, it wasn't me," Logano explained.
From that point on, Logano's focus shifted to salvaging what he could. He fought to maintain his position inside the top 10, knowing every point counted in the Playoff race.
"I was determined to hang on and get as many points as possible," he said. "There were moments where we showed we could run with the best, but we lost track position in the third stage. We had to fight back."
The two-tire strategy gave Logano a brief glimpse of clean air, but he couldn't hold on for the win. Yet, his veteran experience shone through as he fought to the end, securing valuable points with a top-10 finish that tightened the Playoff picture.
"We need to win to stay in this fight," Logano emphasized. "Today, we closed the gap a bit. It's still possible to point our way in, but we can't afford any more setbacks."
With the Round of 8 intensifying, all eyes turn to Talladega, a track where Logano has tasted victory before. It's a race where experience, aggression, and timing are everything.
Las Vegas may not have delivered the miracle win, but it showcased the unwavering determination of Team Penske. As they head into Talladega, this determination could be their secret weapon.
Logano currently sits seventh in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoff standings, 24 points below the Championship 4 cutline. In the spring race, he finished fifth but was later disqualified due to a spoiler issue, a penalty he can't afford to repeat if he wants to chase his fourth NASCAR Cup Series championship.
