In a controversial decision, UAB hired Trent Dilfer, a former Super Bowl champion, as their head football coach in 2022. However, this outside-the-box choice has now backfired spectacularly, with Dilfer's tenure ending abruptly after just over two seasons.
The team's recent performance has been nothing short of disastrous, with a record of 9-21 and a current losing streak of three games, each by a significant margin. The Blazers' defense, in particular, has been a cause for concern, conceding an average of 41.3 points per game, the highest in the sport.
"Our on-field performance has not met the winning standard we set for the program," UAB Athletics Director Mark Ingram stated. "This decision allows us to move forward in the best interest of the long-term success of our football program."
Dilfer's journey to UAB began in 2017 when he left ESPN after a nine-year stint. He then coached at Libscomb Academy in Nashville for four years before taking on the UAB role. Despite inheriting a team that had a decent 7-6 record in 2022, Dilfer's UAB teams struggled, finishing with records of 4-8 and 3-9 in his two full seasons.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dilfer's lack of collegiate coaching experience was a risk, and some argue it was a gamble that didn't pay off. With the team's recent losses, including a 53-33 defeat to Florida Atlantic, the writing was on the wall.
And this is the part most people miss: Dilfer's impact extends beyond the win-loss column. Ingram acknowledged that while the results weren't there, each player who suited up for Dilfer will leave UAB as a better person.
Now, UAB turns to another ESPN-connected figure, promoting Alex Mortensen, the son of late ESPN legend Chris Mortensen, to interim head coach. Mortensen, who was the offensive coordinator, will lead the team for the remainder of the season.
